Date, but not Dead

By Kiana Koh

Let’s start this off by saying that Singapore is really expensive. It is even more expensive when you’re young, in love and just looking to have some fun with your boyfriend/girlfriend without burning a big hole in your pocket! Hence, the title, ‘Date, but not dead.’ Because you know, the worst thing is not having any money living here (cue eye roll.)

Yes, I know what you’re thinking right now. “Cannot be la!”

I know it might seem impossible but after seeing this list, you won’t lose hope!  ☺

I have listed all these activities/places together with good food nearby that won’t break your bank, because traveling around isn’t that cheap either, so this kills two birds with one stone!

Time to put away your smartphones and get them brain juices flowing! Head down to the Mind Café, where you will be able to play classic board games such as Jenga, Monopoly, LIFE and other really unique and cool board games! For even more fun, bring some friends and make it a double date!

When you walk over to SOTA, there’s a place that is simply way too good to resist and is super wallet friendly as well! The place is, I’m Kim Korean BBQ.

I’m Kim Korean BBQ is a buffet BBQ, and you just have to pay SGD 14++ for lunch, or SGD 22++ for dinner! It’s is really worth it considering you can eat all you want and the impressive choices of meat you can have there!

Got a song stuck in your head? The best way to let it go (get it?), would be to sing it out loud! And what better way to do it than going to an impromptu karaoke? Head down to Manekineko! With a wide selection of songs you can choose from, it has never been easier to search for that song stuck in your head! Also, after paying, you’ll get a mug and anything you want from the snack bar at any time, because ALL is free flow! Some snacks include soft serve ice cream, slushies and many more!!!

Prices can be seen in the first picture, but they do vary sometimes due to promotions, so do check the price on their website beforehand! Also, I do recommend trying the Manekineko at Marina Square! After singing to your heart’s content, you can walk down and eat at this place that serves delicious fried chicken and fish at Chic-a-boo! Their corn muffins are to die for as well! Just imagine biting into a soft fluffy muffin with a just the right hint of sweetness. (I’m already drooling)

So there you have Date #2!

Singapore’s weather is very hot and to keep cool, the first thing you would do is to turn on the aircon, or go to a place with aircon. If I suggest a place where it is similar to Wild Wild Wet, but at a hugely discounted price, would you believe me? It’s hard to, I know, but guess what? YES! There is such a place! At Jurong East Swimming complex, there is a lazy river, competition pool, and even a wave pool! And you get to have such fun that rivals Wild Wild Wet at a fee of $2!

Fun at Jurong East

After having fun at Jurong East Swimming Complex, you can choose to go to Boon Lay (where Jurong Point is) or Jurong East (where JCube, JEM, IMM, Westgate) to have your meal!

Some places I would recommend would be MOS Burger (oldie but a goodie) in Jurong Point, or Astons at Jcube, Pastamania in JEM, Ajisen Ramen in IMM or 328 Katong Laksa at Westgate!

West Coast seems like a very far and boring area for most people, but they are not exactly wrong either! There isn’t much to do in West Coast, however, there is a recreation centre that’s tucked in beside Clementi Stadium with a bowling alley that is quite inexpensive!

Price: Unclear (less than $15 though)

After bowling, you can choose if you want to head to Clementi Mall, or West Coast Plaza for some good food! If you decide to go to West Coast Plaza, there is a Korean Cuisine place called Sunny that serves up really scrumptious food, especially the Hot Plate beef set!

The next place for a date is a no brainier, visit the beach at Sentosa! Be it the Siloso beach or the Palawan beach, each has it’s own charm!

After soaking up some rays and playing in the water, look for this place called Slappy Cakes! It is a pancake place that allows you to DIY your own pancakes! You can start off by choosing a batter, each batter serves up to 7-8 pancakes! Then you can choose your very own toppings and sauces, so you can let loose and go crazy with it! Do remember that you have to pay for the toppings though, as they aren’t free.

At the end of the day, nothing is free, but I do hope that with these suggestions, everyone is able to go out on dates and just bask in the company of each other.
